Over 40,000 complaints in the form of messages were received by the anti-corruption ‪#‎WhatsApp‬ helpline of Delhi Police's vigilance department since its launch in August, and has led to cases booked against nine policemen on the basis of "genuine" complaints.
According to the data compiled by the department, it has received 40,477 messages on its helpline so far and registered six cases on the basis of "genuine" complaints while six other cases are being probed.
"A total of nine policemen of the rank of constable to sub-inspector and a home guard have been booked in six cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) Sindhu Pillai.
The vigilance department had started its two new anti-corruption helpline numbers – 1064 and 9910641064 – a WhatsApp helpline, on August 6.
Other than this, the vigilance unit has received around 500 written complaints this year, of which, 227 are currently under inquiry.
"Three police officials, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector have been arrested this year under charges of corruption while 39 police officials have been suspended for alleged corrupt practices.
"The unit has registered a total of 23 cases this year till November 2 against policemen for allegedly taking bribe," said a senior police official.
