Amazon.com, the US-based e-commerce giant, has launched its marketplace model in India, offering a platform for third-party sellers and online consumers to sell and buy products. The Indian e-commerce market is experiencing tremendous growth, and by 2015, the online retail industry is expected to grow from INR32bn ($437m) in 2012 to INR100bn ($1.4bn), representing a CAGR of 45%-48%, according to a CRISIL report. With internet usage and 3G penetration expected to grow at over 60%, it is expected that over 180 million users in India will have access to online retail. Amazon India has already added over 200 million books and music and movies CD/DVDs to its catalogue, with mobile phones and cameras to be added in the coming weeks. So, it’s final and official- Amazon.com, the Seattle, Washington (U.S) based global e-commerce leader has launched its renowned market place model in India (IN). While there is no doubt in potential of eCommerce in India, this entry will make the battle even tougher in highly competitive Indian online market.

Under market place model, the U.S based firm will offer a platform to sell & buy products by third party sellers and online end consumers. The foreign companies are currently not authorized to offer online retailing in India.
