Many people suffer from the unwanted marketing messages and calls made by the mobile network operators. It gets really annoying when you are busy in a meeting for driving or engaged in some other work when your mobile phone starts ringing and when you pick up you are showered with credit card offers, insurance policies and what not. So how do you avoid getting such phone calls or SMS messages?
The fact is that none of the service providers in India will want its users to subscribe to the DND services. They make money by allowing advertisers to send SMS’s to their customers. And hence even this simple process is unnecessarily made complicated. In most cases this service does not work and fails to register the ‘do not disturb’ services.
This service was formerly called DND (Do Not Disturb), which now transformed to NCPR (National Consumer Preference Register) by the TRAI (The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India). Previously, people who subscribed to DND had chances to receive the unsolicited promotions calls from their mobile network operators. With NCPR, the chances of receiving these unwanted messages is almost zero.
As per TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) consumers can register their telephone number or their mobile number for inclusion in the NCPR (National Consumer Preference Register) for simply dialing 1909, and then follow the instruction. However many will not be able to successfully activate the DND services and will fail to get their number in the DND registry.

How to Activate Do Not Disturb India Registration:
This process of activating do not disturb service is all same for Aircel, Airtel, BSNL, Tata DoCoMo, Idea Cellular, Loop Mobile, MTNL, Reliance Communications, MTS India, Tata Indicom, Uninor, Vodafone and etc.
Fully Blocked Category:
Send SMS at START 0 to 1909 or Call at 1909
Partial Blocked Category:
- Send SMS at START 1 to 1909 to block Banking – Insurance – Financial Products – Credit Cards
- Send SMS at START 2 to 1909 to block Real Estate
- Send SMS at START 3 to 1909 to block Education
- Send SMS at START 4 to 1909 to block Health
- Send SMS at START 5 to 1909 to block Consumer Goods & Automobiles
- Send SMS at START 6 to 1909 to block Communication – Broadcasting – Entertainment – IT
- Send SMS at START 7 to 1909 to block Tourism
You can also De-Register the DND service to receive the marketing calls and messages in future. To do that, just send an SMS STOP and send it to 1909. You can also call 1909 to cancel the service.
List of Telecom Operators:
Airtel:
It’s same for the Airtel Postpaid as well as Prepaid Mobile customers; they can SMS “START DND” to 121. After sending the SMS you will receive a Unique Reference Number by SMS, for your records. While the Airtel Broadband and telephone services customer can call customer care at 121 from your Airtel landline phone and place your request. Right after placing the call, you will receive a Unique Reference Number, you should save that for future reference.
Vodafone:
Vodafone also allows you to register for the DND. And if you wish to stop receiving such communication on your Vodafone number and want to register yourself on the NDNC registry, simply send SMS “STOP 0” to 1909 or fill in the small form on company’s website. After submitting the form, you will be asked to enter the 4 digit PIN which would be directly sent to your mobile number that you enter in the form. Now confirm the PIN code and you will be officially registered for the Do not disturb list, which will be acknowledged by Vodafone in seven days, and you can find your name on the list of NDNC registry.
Idea Cellular:
If you are an Idea user, and desire to stop receiving the unsolicited communication from the company, all you need to do is fill up the form and submit it. Company will act accordingly within the 30 working days to remove your number from the telemarketing lists.
MTNL:
MTNL Delhi service has a dedicated web portal called Unified Call Center . Where it asks for your LandLine / CDMA / GSM No. or Customer Account No. and takes you to fill up a form.
Reliance Mobile:
You can unsubscribe from such unsolicited communication from Reliance by filling up the form. They will stop call/message within 30 days from the date of request.
Tata Indicom:
If you do not wish to be informed about deals through telephone calls or by SMS from Tata Indicom, just simply send an SMS from the mobile number saying, START DND to 1909 (toll free) or register here.
Key points & Facts to remember with DND Activation:
- DND (NCPR) cannot block your bank SMS alerts, bank communications, online bookings, third party personal calling, and etc.
- It takes minimum 7 days to process your request to stop the unwanted messages.
- You should have atcleast 3 months of time before applying to new DND request after the previous one.
- Calls and messages to 1909 is completely toll free, and you don’t have to pay anything.
