How to Be a Responsible Dog Owner

Many people say that dogs are a human’s best friend, and it’s hard to argue with that. Dogs are loyal and enthusiastic, and if you treat them well, they will be your constant, loving companion. They will be there for you when you’re feeling down, and they’ll enrich your life in innumerable ways.

However, if you’re going to be a dog owner, you need to be a disciplinarian as well as take care of the animal. If you let a dog do whatever it wants, you’ll probably get in trouble with your neighbors sooner rather than later.

Here are tips to help you be the best possible dog owner.

Don’t Let Your Dog Run Out in the Street

As a responsible dog owner, one thing you’ll need to do is keep your dog restrained when they’re out in the yard. You need to erect a strong fence around the yard so that the animal cannot run out into the street whenever they like. If you don’t do this, then the dog can cause a wreck, and then a car accident lawyer will call your house and tell you to appear in court.

If you decide not to erect a fence around your front yard, you could also tie the animal up if you’re going to allow them to be out there. You might have a dog run to which you attach their collar. That way, the animal can get some fresh air, but they can’t take off running.

You might also keep the dog in the backyard instead of the front. You can set up a doghouse for them if you’d like as well.

Train Your Dog Not to Bark

You might also take your dog to obedience school to teach them various behaviors and to discourage others. For instance, maybe your dog likes to bark at the postal carrier when they come. Perhaps they want to show the UPS or Amazon delivery person their displeasure when these trespassers get close to the porch.

Dogs have protective impulses, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If you tell the animal to be quiet, though, they should listen to you.

Getting proper canine training can teach your pet when they can bark and when they should stay silent. That will keep your neighbors happy as well since it will bother them if your pooch constantly wakes up the whole block at night.

Take Them to Doggy Daycare

You might also think about taking your dog to daycare if you own an active and enthusiastic breed. Some dogs do not get along well with others, so this won’t be possible. However, many dogs like interacting with others, and if you take them to daycare a couple of times per week, that’s good for them.

Your dog can run around happily and burn off some steam. If you work from home, this is a suitable way for you to get some work done when your pet is not around. You can get much-needed peace and quiet, and if you have a young dog with a ton of lingering puppy energy, this is ideal for them.

Take Them to the Vet Periodically

You should also remember to take your dog to the vet once per year. When they get older, it will probably be every six months.

Regular vet appointments allow your pet to stay up to date on their shots. They need boosters sometimes, and your vet also needs to check for parasites and diseases.

Also, if you notice abnormal dog behavior, you need to take your dog to the vet so a trained professional can check them out. You might do this is if your dog seems lethargic, if they lose their appetite, if they have trouble breathing, or anything else that might indicate something is wrong.

Take Them to the Park

You can also take your dog to the park when the weather is nice. Some parks have enclosed doggy play areas where your pet can interact with some new friends. You can take them to a nature preserve if you have one nearby.

This way, both you and your pet can get some exercise. There’s nothing better to do on a fine spring day than to spend time with the animal that loves you.

If you take care of your dog, then they will take care of you as well. This relationship has existed for centuries, and it’s great for both humans and animals.
