The pair came together with a love for Italy and fashion. Their fashion became known for its sensuality, nostalgia and feminity. One of the first celebrities to help D&G become a household name was LGBT ally and icon Madonna. Madonna chose D&G to be her costume designers on the Girlie World Tour.

On top of being business partners, Dolce & Gabbana founders were an openly gay couple throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s. The pair helped reinforce the idea that people could and should be true to themselves. While the pair ended their personal relationship in 2005, they remained close business partners. They are two men, a part of the LGBT community, who have created an enduring fashion empire for almost 40 years.

In 2016, D&G also released handbags and t-shirts that portrayed families with same-sex couples. The release came at a divisive time in Italy, when same-sex marriage was a heated debate.
