Kukari ki Rasam’ (The thread ritual):
Kukari ki Rasam is done by placing a white thread in private parts of girl. If the thread is red by blood stains then it is proof of rupture of the hymen of the girl proving her virginity. This ritual is followed by “ Sansi” (a nomadic tribe) originally located in the Rajasthan (India). In the cases where a girl is not able to pass the test, If the thread is not found stained, the girl is declared impure . Girl is beaten enough to tell the name of the person with whom she has affair before marriage. Once girl tell the name, a huge amount of money is asked from parents and the person she was involved with.
“Paani ki Dheej” (purity by water):
It is a purity by water test, the woman has to hold her breath under water while another person takes one hundred steps. If she is unable to do this, she is not considered a virgin. And holding breath is not easy for even 100 seconds, I believe 100 steps would have taken more time. This ritual is use to test if girl is lying about her virginity or not mainly held in Northen India.
“Agnipariksha” (trial by fire):
The brides have to walk with red-hot iron in their hands with just a plate made out of leaves and dough to shield her hands from the heat. If her hands are burnt, she is considered to be impure. This is again a brutal ritual held in Indian parts.
Female genital cutting and stitching:
FGM (female genital mutilation) also know as female circumcision, In many Tribes of East Africa, girl’s private parts are stitched in creepy way. This is done so that the girls here can not make a relationship with anyone before marriage. Many girls become victims of infection during this process. Stitching is opened after marriage. But, in the name of tradition, women suffer such brutal pain of stitching and unstitching . There are many types of FGM performed, mostly performed way are, Removal of the prepuce with or without excision of all or part of the clitoris. Another one is Excision of the clitoris with partial or total excision of the labia. The circumcision of women is also done in the Dawoodi Bohra community of Shia Muslims of India and Pakistan. The population of this community lives in Mumbai.
Sex with children:
Child abuse and child labor are major issues all over the world but children in Papua New Guinea are allowed to have sex. Here boys 10 to 12 years can make a relationship with girls older than 6 years. Here the sex is recognized before marriage but you can not share your food before marriage. Is not strange tradition. Child prostitution as a child labor is normal here in this country.
Sleeping with Stranger:
African women like those of Kenya, Ghana and Uganda have to go through widowhood rites to prove her purity and innocence in her husband’s death. Such rituals calls for sleeping beside the corpse for as long as three days for the purification of the soul. They believe that if they keep control over their mind after staying awake with an unaware person overnight, their soul becomes pure. Bathing naked in front of everybody and having intercourse with brother in-laws or strangers for the purification of soul is the belief run behind.
Breast Ironing:
The process uses large stones, a hammer or a spatula that has been heated over hot coals to compress or mutilate the breast This painful practice is done to stop women from taking big size. Local people say that after doing this, men will pay less attention to women and they will also be able to read and write. Many mothers prepare their own daughter to do this.Rich families in Cameroon make young girls wear a wide belt, which presses the small paps in the breast and prevents them from growing. It is a widespread practice in Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa and now moving all over UK.
Running blade on teeth:
Sumatra’s Mantawaian tribe has a tradition of running a blade on women’s teeth. chiseled, pointy-sharp teeth make women beautiful this is believed by this Indonesian tribe. During this time, hygiene is not taken care of nor does the pain that occurs during this process. Tooth-filing is an extremely painful practice The surgery was performed without any anesthetics, as is the general practice. But still there is a strong belief that doing this, they will look more beautiful and the men will be more happy with these women.
Kidnapping and marring women:
In Kyrgyzstan (a country in Central Asia), this is a custom in which single young men kidnap their bride of choice and pressure them to agree to marriage . Romany Gypsy also has such a strange ritual. According to tradition, when a man, usually in his twenties, wants to marry for the first time, he takes a bride and starts arranging for her kidnapping. Man and his friends catch the victim on the streets, sometimes use violence, and forcibly take them to the hostage’s family home. The woman is put under heavy pressure, which includes physical violence, but in most cases, captor refrain from rape.
If a man is successful in kidnapping women and keep her by his side for 2-3 days has to marry irrespective of her choice, this is officially allowed in Gypsy. But this incident results many brides committing suicide in couple of months.
Making women uncovered and beating:
There is a tradition in parts of Brazil and Uaupes that women and girls are brought naked on the streets and beaten brutally in front of all. This is done until they become unconscious or reach to death. This practice is associated with the mentality of suppressing women. Some times this ritual is followed to check whether a girl is womanly and worthy to marriage if she wakes after going through this torture.
Girls are forced to take heavy diets:
Mouratania’s young girls are forced to eat a lot of food before marriage. Actually, there is a belief that marriage with fatty girls is a symbol of good fortune. Therefore, for feeding unhygienic and unhealthy food to girls,people are not left behind.Food is given to girls up to 16 thousand calories a day. Many times girls fall sick for a long time as a result of unhealthy diet’s poor results.
Making tattoos on breast and back:
A large number of tattoos are made on breast, stomach and back of girls in Prague and Brazil. However, it is not for girls’ choice, but forcibly. Its purpose is that men will like such girls more.
Eating the baby’s placenta:
Mothers eat their own placenta after giving birth in the name of consuming nutrients that placenta contains.
Wearing rings to have a giraffe’s neck in Thailand:
Women of the Kayan Lahwi tribe are well known for wearing neck ring. Brass coils that are placed around the neck, appearing to lengthen it. The women wearing these coils are known as “giraffe women” and considered to be beautiful. This ritual starts at the age of 5 from wearing single ring to 9-10 rings. Coils weighing up to 25 pounds depress the chest and shoulders.
Binding Feet:
This was the ritual persisted in China. Despite of the pain, millions of Chinese women stood firm in their devotion to the tradition. Belief behind this is that they will lucky and the guy who marry them will be proud of her. They took small feet as pride.
