The Indian Mario has it all from Rajinikanth and Salman Khan gags to auto rickshaws and beggars

Bombay-based comedy collective All India Bakchod (AIB) put out a rather atypical and remarkable video on their hugely popular YouTube channel. The video, titled ‘Indian Mario’, depicted Nintendo’s Super Mario character trawling through the Mushroom Kingdom that many of us became familiar with in the ’90s, when video game consoles entered the Indian market. However, the elements and references in the video — ranging from Rajinikanth and Salman Khan gags to auto rickshaws and beggars — are completely Indian.

The story behind the video, which has since garnered over 2,70,000 views, began with a bit of hero worship. Mihir Lele, a 22-year-old designer currently studying Animation Film Design at National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, was a regular subscriber to AIB’s podcast and was, in particular, a huge fan of AIB co-founder Tanmay Bhat. Last year, he sent the stand-up comic a personalised piece of fan art. Impressed and touched by the gesture, Tanmay asked him to come for one of their live shows and meet them backstage.

The latest AIB sketch is a dedication to one of our favourite video series and games growing up.

Say hello to Indian Mario!

This is definitely at par with all the dorkly stuff if not better! Truly a great job with all the references!
