Inception (2010)

Inception movie

The list begins with none other than Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, Inception. Almost a decade later inception is still one of the coolest and best mind-bending movies to hit the cinemas. The good thing about this mind-bending film is that it comes with a well-delivered explanation of everything to describe the SCI-FI concepts and visuals. Inception is the infiltration of a person’s mind through his dreams to plant an idea for organic growth within the mind. The movie stars Leonardo de Caprio as Don Cob who gets a task to assemble a team that can achieve inception on a wealthy elite. The job came with a good payout. However, completing this job pushed Cob’s limit of sanity with memories projected from his mind threatening and jeopardizing the mission. The movie pushes the limit of reality to an extent where the audience is set off in existential pondering of their own.

Interstellar (2014)

Interstellar movie

Yet again another Christopher Nolan’s movie. An absolute mind-bending film that takes you on a definite trip of existential pondering. Interstellar is fairly one of the latest movies in this list released in 2014 and those who have watched this cinematic masterpiece are still trying to figure out what exactly happened. Much like inception, Interstellar explores the nature of time and reality. Starring Mathew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway the actors are sent on an expedition through the black hole to find a habitable planet for the people of earth. Focusing on how Einstein’s theory of relativity affects those exploring the territories of space and time. The movie made it to 5 Academy Award nominations.

The Machinist (2004)

The mechanist movie

The iconic role Trevor Reznik, taken by Christian Bale now known as the Dark Knight ‘batman’. Before taking on the role of cape crusader, in 2004 bale took on the role of Trevor Reznik in a gritty film The Machinist. He went through an extreme body transformation which surely got a lot of attention. Trevor is an insomniac factory worker who claims that he hasn’t slept in about a year. Soon things get weirder for him as he struggles between knowing what’s reality. To keep himself in grip of his surroundings like Nolan’s memento Trevor also has an obsessive system of notes. With a very strong plot and some excellent acting, this psychological thriller is surely one of the most mind-bending movies of its time.

The Prestige (2006)

The prestige movie

Yes, the list seems to be dominated by Christopher Nolan’s movies but it’s almost to take the expert out of his genre. This 2006 movie is still one of the most mind-wobbling movies made yet. Featuring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as rivals’ magicians in the 1800s. Both actors kept the show alive through their showmanship for both on-screen and real-life audiences. The movie is filled with twists and layers delivered excellently by the two actors. Eventually, the rivalry fuels up towards a violent consequence which gives real-life historian Nikola Tesla a very smooth transaction in the movie. A handful of revelations appear at the end of the movie with a classic Nolan’s head-scratcher. The movie is an entertainment-packed mental exercise. Put it on your watch list if you wish to flex some muscles up in your brain.

Tenet (2020)

Tenet movie

It should be clear by now that no one can take Christopher Nolan out of this list. The guy is made for movies like this. Tenet is Nolan’s latest release, his big return to sci-fi movies after the interstellar. Tenet in many ways seems similar to Nolan’s masterpiece “inception’. Tenet is a spy based movie featuring a lot of stars in SUITS. As its name implies, the movie has a premise surrounding time inversion, as the timeline of the movie is inverted, the first half being the second and the second being the first. The lead in the movie is called the protagonist who uses tech to harness time for itself. Now tenet may have some critical review for not being so emotionally strong however it still features Nolan’s signature mind-bending concept which helped it cut this list. If you’ve found Inception a captivating plot and have the pace to capture its fast pace plot then you should definitely check out Tenet as well.
