History of Women’s Hockey Popularity
It’s interesting to know that women’s hockey possesses a rich history, the official beginning of women’s hockey is considered to have occurred in 1891 in a game played between two Canadian teams. This encounter was recorded on February 11th in the Ottawa Citizen, and is widely regarded as the true start of the women’s hockey.
In 1895 Queens University in Kingston, Ontario became one of the first universities in the world to have a women’s hockey team. The “Love-me-Littles” practiced hard with nearly zero support from the university. In 1896, they changed their name to the “Morning Glories” and started playing against other women’s teams.
Women’s hockey continued to grow during the late 19th century and in 1920 women’s hockey teams were finally present in both US and Canadian universities. This allowed for an entirely new level of competition, as women were then able to play in sanctioned university games alongside and against their peers, marking a huge advancement in women’s hockey.
Like many other sports in the United States, the postwar years in the 1940s and 1950s led to a steep decline in the popularity of the sport, as women turned away from the rink and instead towards working to help support their families at home. A surging popularity in men’s ice hockey during this time also turned eyes away from women’s hockey. But the Sport Sees a Rise in Popularity in late 20th century.
In 1992, women’s hockey was finally declared a full metal sport in the Winter Games beginning in 2002. Even after that in 1994 Norway decided against showcasing women’s hockey in Lillehammer but Japan accepted women’s hockey to be showcased in 1998. The 1998 competition became the first year that women’s hockey was contested as a full-medal sport in the Winter Games.
For Team USA, it was a truly monumental occasion as Team USA defeated Canada in the finals, helping the women of the United States win the first gold medal possible in this event.
